Plant Breeding Excellence

Developing Multi-Disease Resistant Varieties

Our Plant Breeding Division has developed over 80 varieties of different tobacco strains since inception, maintaining a world-class germplasm collection with over 1,000 accessions from around the globe.

Our Philosophy

To produce multi-disease resistant varieties that meet grower and merchant requirements while ensuring limited chemical use, environmental sustainability, and reduced production costs.

Breeding Strategies

Promoting Profitable & Sustainable Tobacco Farming

Continuous Variety Examination

Regular assessment of existing varieties for disease resistance gaps and market demand changes that may necessitate new breeding programs.

Wide Adaptability Development

Developing and releasing varieties that are widely adaptable to meet specific grower requirements across different growing regions.

Stakeholder Participation

Coordinating and promoting stakeholder participation in the development and release of tobacco cultivars through collaborative programs.

Germplasm Conservation

Maintaining a wide germplasm pool with over 1,000 accessions that can be exploited for variety improvement and genetic diversity preservation.

Molecular Tools Integration

Incorporating Marker Assisted Selection (MAS), QTL Analysis, and Genotyping by Sequencing (GBS) to expedite breeding processes.

International Collaboration

Collaborating with international tobacco and grass breeding institutions in variety development and evaluation programs.
